Cooking the Burgers
- Preheat a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat until very hot.
- Divide the ground beef into four equal portions and roll them into balls.
- Place the beef balls in the skillet and immediately smash them down with a spatula to form thin patties.
- Cook for about 2-3 minutes until the edges are brown and crispy.
- Flip the patties, add a slice of cheese on top, and cook for another 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted.
- Remove the patties from the skillet and let them rest briefly.
Assembling the Burgers
- Toast the burger buns in the skillet until golden brown.
- Layer the lettuce, tomato, pickles, and the cooked patty on the bottom half of each bun.
- Add ketchup and mustard if desired, then place the top half of the bun on each burger.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes
For best results, do not overwork the beef when forming the patties. Serve with fries or a side salad.
