Ingredients

Spiced Apple Filling
  • 6 cups apples peeled, cored, and sliced 1/4-inch thick (blend of Honeycrisp & Granny Smith)
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg freshly grated preferred
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour or cornstarch to thicken apple juices
Crisp Oat Streusel Topping
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats do not use instant oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter cold, cubed into small pieces
  • 1/3 cup chopped pecans or walnuts optional, for extra nutty crunch
For Serving
  • 6 scoops vanilla bean ice cream for serving warm
  • 2 tbsp salted caramel sauce optional drizzle

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Prep Oven & Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly butter an 8x8-inch or 9-inch square baking dish.
  2. Mix Spiced Apples: In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, maple syrup, fresh lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1 tablespoon of flour until thoroughly coated. Transfer to the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  3. Make Oat Streusel: In a separate medium bowl, whisk together rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold cubed butter. Work the butter into the dry mixture using a pastry blender, fork, or your clean fingers until coarse, pea-sized crumbs and clusters form. Toss in chopped pecans if using.
  4. Layer Streusel: Scatter the oat streusel mixture generously and evenly over the spiced apples, covering the fruit completely.
  5. Bake to Golden Perfection: Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40-45 minutes, until the apple juices are bubbling warmly around the edges and the oat streusel is deep golden brown and crisp.
  6. Cool & Serve Warm: Allow the apple crisp to rest for 10 minutes so the aromatic spiced juices thicken slightly. Spoon into dessert bowls and crown with a generous scoop of melting vanilla bean ice cream and caramel drizzle!
